Monday March 25, 2002 :: THIS ONE TIME AT BAND CAMP... One-line stories...oh, I've got millions of these. I broke my shoulder in kindergarten because my friend convinced me that the lawn chairs 4 feet down from the tree house would be ample cushion for me land on. Looking back on it, that last one is actually more terrifying than funny. |

EXPRESS YOURSELF I'm all for supporting the arts, and allowing people to express themselves in the name of art. If you feel compelled to write, sing, act, paint, dance, take photos, or whatever else your spirit tells you to do, go for it. Write your name on the wall with your own feces and call it art, see if I care. But don't do it for attention, and don't do something for the sake of being different. If your art brings you fame, fine. But that shouldn't be the goal. Do it because it's what you feel, and what you want to do. It's not something you should have to force out of you, or try to do. Art happens when you don't think about it. Art happens when you're inspired. Art shouldn't be done for the sake of drawing attention to yourself. And that's the sense I get from this guy Thoth last night during the Oscars. I don't think I've seen anything that contrived before in my life. Why try to be different to gain acceptance? Sure, some people truly are different, and 'out there', and groundbreaking - and the world needs them. And the world will remember them. But a man wearing a loin cloth and dancing around like a fairy playing a violin will be forgotten quicker than Skippy from Family Ties. And Anne Heche saying she wasn't just Anne Heche, but also a second person named Celestia who came from another planet and spoke a different language directly with God is nothing more than a publicity stunt or a script she actually had the sense to turn down. She was tired of being Ellen's girlfriend, and needed to reclaim her identity. They're like the rebellious teenager who connects each orifice with piercings and chains just to get the attention of their parents and piss them off. And eventually, consumers see the Marilyn Mansons and Courtney Loves of the world for what they really are - a novelty act that has little to nothing to add to the arts. Unfortunately by the time that happens, they're already laughing their way to the bank. |
